A heartier, meatier choice

Slicer tomatoes have a round or heart shape, depending on the variety. They’re easy to cut because they a meaty and sturdy consistency. These tomatoes are fantastic in wedges in salads or slices in hamburgers. They are the most commonly grown and widely available.

Tomato sandwich

Comfort food at its best in the South. It screams summer, it telegraphs the joy of simple pleasures.

And the star of the show? Always a GREAT tomato! People will disagree in what brand of bread you use, or whether mayonnaise or miracle whip is better, but no one will ever argue with you about a good slicer tomato as the basis of the juiciest, most perfect sandwich.

Southern Living recommends “preferably leave the bread untoasted” because the soft bread and the juicy tomato will blend together so perfectly, something a toasted bread simply won’t do.

Remember that there’s no such thing as eating this sandwich without dripping some of the tomato juices, that’s a sign of a good tomato.
